My Son Had an Allergic Reaction Today

Yep. The title pretty much sums it up. Today was extremely stressful and I’m going to tell you why. I’ve never been in this situation before being that I am a first-time mom. I have allergies myself and have cared for kids with allergies but have never had anything too extreme where I didn’t know what to do. This was my own baby.

We woke up today and had a regular day just like we normally do. He had his bottle first thing (EleCare, for severe food allergies and GI disorders) followed by a bit of Cheerios and some scrambled eggs. This has been his routine for quite some time now.

We continued on with our normal routine and then we both had a nap. It was the greatest nap ever. I woke up to him hitting me and saying Nene. He had another bottle and then a banana and some blueberry Gerber Puffs. Another normal snack for him.

It was because his shirt was filled with the smooshed up banana that I took him to the room to change his clothes. That was when I noticed unusual red circles under his armpits and upper arm area. I then noticed that these red circles were all over his body. When I went to change his diaper I was shocked. I started to cry.

I knew it wasn’t heat related because we were pretty cool in our apartment. I immediately took pictures and sent it to my boyfriend and my sister who is a nurse. Nurse Tasha, if you don’t remember.

I’m so used to turning to my mom or grandma for everything. They were always in the next room. Between both of them, they have like 10 kids so they’ve seen it all. But I moved… and I was on my own 20 minutes away. I began to panic and called his pediatrician right away. It was around 2:30 pm and luckily they could see us at 3 pm. It worked out perfectly because we now live about 20 minutes away and the roads are usually quite busy at that time. We used to live right across the street from the doctors! It was so convenient.

Anyway, we finally made it to the doctors and we were seen right away. He did not have a temperature and to my knowledge, we have not been exposed to anyone who has tested positive for COVID. Dr. R (whom he absolutely adores) checked his tiny nose, inside his mouth, his joints, his ears, and everything you can think of. Everything seemed normal besides the hives.

She said it could be a number of reasons as babies come in with hives quite frequently. Some of them are:

  • Food allergy
  • Weather
  • Change of soaps, lotions, etc
  • COVID
  • Bug bite
  • Pollen

That’s just some of what she said. We can’t be sure because we haven’t changed his diet. I told her that he tried cooked red bell peppers yesterday evening because I had made sausage and peppers for dinner. She said it was highly unlikely that would be the cause. He really enjoyed it and kept demanding more. Everything was fine.

She recommended we keep him home, no sunbathing, no long baths, and no introduction to new foods at the moment. As new parents, we were very nervous. We only want the best for our baby boy. We never want to see anything happen to him.

I knew when I signed up to be a parent that there would be its ups and downs but I definitely wasn’t prepared for the scary aspect of it. And even when something scary did happen, as I said earlier, I’m so used to my mom or grandma being in the next room.

Imagine I wasn’t paying attention or he didn’t have smooshed banana on his shirt. I wouldn’t have noticed right away and who knows what would have happened. He wasn’t showing any signs of distress. No crying. No nothing. Always trust your parental instincts and get everything checked even if it’s a minor issue. Better safe than sorry.

I am so happy Isaiah is okay. He is now on allergy medicine 2 times a day. If we see no change we will do an allergy test. If we see swelling or the situation getting worse than we probably have a bigger issue on our hands. I thank God that we got home safe and I just hugged my baby tight. I love him so freakin’ much. You don’t understand. I just wanted to share this experience with you guys because maybe another mom has gone through the same thing.

(In his pictures he has banana all over his face. We left to the doctors immediately. I didn’t even think to clean him up.)

So that was my day… how was yours?

  1. Glad to hear he’s okay. My best friend is severely allergic to so much food, and I know his mom had to really adapt cooking and baking to accommodate him when he was a baby. It’s good that you have a bit of experience already. Even now that we’re adults and we’re all a lot more aware and responsible, it’s still worrisome, but it’s manageable.

  2. Wow that sounds really terrifying- I can not even imagine how scared you must have been when you saw the swelling. I really hope the medication helps and that you can figure out what he’s allergic to so you can avoid it.
