We all have those random days where everything feels impossible. There are days where my anxiety makes me overwhelmed and I need to calm down. Then there are days my depression can sneak up on me and I need some excitement. Over the years I’ve handled stress in many different ways. Some better than others but I’ve stuck to these safe and always reliable options to help me get out of a funk rather than doing something unhelpful. I hope some of these can be helpful to you too.
Take a walk– There’s no better quick fix than just getting up and going for some fresh air. Walking is also a form of exercise which releases endorphins and can lighten your mood. I enjoy listening and paying attention to my surroundings.
Start cooking– Find that recipe you’ve been meaning to try and start cooking. Cooking is one of those things that require attention and focus which is a great way to get out of your funk. The best part is you get to taste the finished product aka the reward!
Show gratitude– This is an easier way to help better your mood. You can do it in private, online, or in person. Take a moment to appreciate all that you have in your life. What is it that you are grateful for? Even when I’m not in a funk, I still like to remember these things because it never fails to put a smile on my face.
Take a hot shower– This is one of my top go-to stress relievers. It’s just so isolating (in a good way) and relaxing. After all, hot water does relax the body. Especially after a long day. It’s kind of like your own personal mini spa.
Take deep breaths– Yes, just like that taking deep breaths can improve how you’re feeling. I find myself taking a lot more deep breaths than usual but that’s because I am more self-aware. I love being able to catch myself almost slipping into a funk and being able to stop, take a breath, and refocus. I’ve been meaning to get into yoga and meditation (I’m still going to), I just need to get my yoga mat first!
Get together with someone close– Call up a close friend or go hang out with the family. Sometimes all it takes is good old-fashioned cheering up. A night with my girlfriends or seeing my family always ends up being the time I never knew I needed.
Embrace the funk– I must admit, once in a while doing this doesn’t seem so bad. There’s nothing wrong with taking a day to stay in pajamas, rethink your life, and eat junk food. As long as you stick to plan and get back on track in the next day or two.
