Hi, there all you lovely people, and happy Friday! These weeks end and start again within a blink of an eye it feels like (not really but still). I’ve been physically so exhausted this week but of course still managing to get by. I woke up this morning and diffused some oils to set the tone first thing. I had no time for meditation since we woke up late today. I knew I needed some sort of zen before heading into a day full of chaos. Staying home with a toddler is chaotic these days. But, I’m just taking it one step at a time. Enough of that, this post is supposed to be about my first time trying sushi! First, let me tell you a bit of a back story.
I’ve been surrounded by seafood and sushi lovers my whole life. I used to eat fish when I was younger but as I grew up seafood became ickier and ickier. So of course, when it came to sushi I just associated it with fish. Why didn’t anyone tell me that you can get fishless sushi? Well, no one told me but I’m so glad I found out on my own. I wouldn’t even give sushi places a chance just because of that. Until one day I had a delivery at a sushi spot. The wait was pretty long so I just picked up a menu to browse at. Lo and behold there was a whole section of vegetable sushi options! I was so excited because the place is so close to my house.
Some of their options were:
- Avocado roll
- Asparagus roll
- Mango Avocado roll
- Sweet Potato Tempura Roll
- Vegetable Tempura Roll
The Taste Test
So I started with only 1 type for my first try. I ordered the Sweet Potato Tempura Roll. It seemed like the perfect match for me since I love sweet potato and sweet/savory combinations. Oh and tempura means fried in the batter so of course, that sold me. You can’t go wrong with something fried. I googled stupid first-timer questions like “Is sushi meant to be eaten hot, room temperature, or cold?” This was a big thing for me!
I whipped out my chopsticks and went right in at room temperature. The first taste I got was the seaweed because usually, white rice is bland. I’ve never tried anything seaweed before so it was different. After the seaweed, you get that sweet note of sweet potato that just balances everything out. I was a fan of it! I’ll definitely be trying the avocado roll next.
I accompanied my sushi with some deep-fried tofu and plain fried rice. The deep-fried tofu was eh, to be honest. My boyfriend and I like tofu but this one wasn’t a go. I guess it got a bit soggy in the container and it just felt a bit wet. My plain fried rice was good and plain just like I like it!
Are you a fan of sushi? Which sushi types are your favorite? What is one food you never thought you’d it but you started to? What’s for dinner tonight? I want to know it all! Let me know in the comments below!
As always, thanks so much for reading! Questions, comments, and feedback are always welcome. If you enjoyed this post, please comment, like and share! Make sure to check out my Instagram; @tianiangela_ and my latest video on YouTube💋

The joys of life are so memorable! As for Sushi, I too never knew you could get it ‘fishless’ I’m from Dayton, Ohio and I’m am not certain if they would make a ‘fishless’ Sushi but I will most definitely ask the next time I’m at a restaurant that serves Sushi. Thanks! 🤴🏽👍🏽

Good on you for trying Sushi! I was never a fan but in the last couple of years got into it too. I enjoy the chicken and avo ones, not a fan of the fishy types. What put me off initially was the seaweed tbh and the smell haha.
So glad I did try it and view it as a healthier option for my takeaways every now and again. Definitely with you on the tempura! Love anything fried, who doesn’t haha

I find it really cool how they have different types of sushi that aren’t fish. I have tried sweet sushi too and sushi with cream cheese in it! It really surprised me!

I hate anything to do with seafood to be honest it just grosses me out- I don’t know why but I just never wanted to have anything to do with seafood even before I was vegan. I love sushi although I feel like the vegan options are overpriced so I just make it at home like a broke student lol! Yours looked yum though- I’ve had sweet potato sushi and it’s one of my favourites! My favourite so far though has been asparagus- I have no idea why but it just works and I love it lol. I hate it when fried tofu gets soggy and the texture is just so off. I usually bake it when I get home so it gets crispy again.

Omg no way! I have no idea why I assumed you liked seafood. Same! The concept of seafood really grosses me out. I bet at home sushi tastes way better! I bet that’ll be a hit in my home. I definitely should’ve tried baking it or even re-frying it! Thanks for sharing!

Baking/re-frying definitely helps- I feel like a tofu OG now that I’ve been eating it for a while 😜
