Mothers & Mental Health| Week 7| Lorraine

Motherhood 2

Meet Lorraine from Texas!

Welcome today’s special guest, Lorraine! Hi mama, how are you on this day?

How many children do you have?

How old were you when you had your first child?

Do you remember your initial reaction when you found out you were pregnant? went like “Oh Shit”

What first comes to mind when you think of mental health?

Too many people are uneducated about mental health and like to pre-judge people.

Do you suffer from any mental illnesses yourself?

No, however, my daughter’s father was Bi-polar and was diagnosed while I was pregnant

How was your mental health before you became a mama? How has motherhood changed or improved your mental health?

When you become a parent especially at a young age, you have no clue what to expect. Motherhood changes you not only physically but mentally. Throughout the years, I’ve had to learn how to be more patient and not so hard on myself (both are which very difficult to do.)  You can be a great parent without being Perfect.

How do you self care?

Listen to music, yoga stretches, get enough sleep, take a walk and step away from my desk when I start feeling frustrated or can’t think clearly.

Advice for other mamas:

Take one day at a time. Learn how to spend quality time with your kids. Focus on things that matter.  When the kids are testing your patience, take a deep breath and try to see the situation from their eyes…your reaction may change. It’s okay to tell your kids you need a few moments to yourself. When you have self-doubt, recall what you do well and bring that positive emotion to the present.

I personally practice what I preach. I had to learn how to be more mindful in my daily life. I have worked from my home office for over 14 yrs which means I had to learn how to balance and time and energy. My kids are currently 10,14 and 24 years old so I have a variety of challenges LOL in my home.

Let’s lighten it up!

What’s your favorite drink?

Hot Green Tea and my cocktail is a Moscow Mule with fresh lime

Favorite movie?

I love movies so it’s hard for me to pick one. However, I love a good gangster movie!

What’s the cutest thing your kids have done?

When my kids were little they use to sing and or dance…depending on who I’m talking about. But they are all so loving.

Salty or sweet?
